Work organisation

Work organisation refers to how work is planned, divided, coordinated and managed within companies – including job design, task allocation, scheduling, work pace, procedures and decision-making. Eurofound examines this via two lenses. The European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) captures workers’ experiences, covering task discretion, pace determinants, teamwork and cognitive demands. The European Company Survey (ECS) tracks workplace practices reported by management, covering the division of labour, the use of (self-managed) teams, levels of hierarchy and direct employee participation in decision-making. Both surveys link work organisation to other dimensions – job quality and worker well-being in the EWCS, and digitalisation, skills use, employee voice, workplace well-being and establishment performance in the ECS. This research is further enriched by qualitative data showing how hybrid work, AI and algorithmic management are reshaping work organisation.
